The benefits of early assessment are widely accepted, but it's never too late to understand. I offer a range of formal and bespoke options to suit the needs of individuals and organisations, with flexible levels of feedback to suit your requirements.
Full Diagnostic Assessment
A full diagnostic assessment gives an overview of how a person learns. Depending on the results, a full diagnostic assessment may be used to give a formal diagnosis of a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia, if appropriate. Even where the assessment shows that there is no specific learning difficulty, it will provide a full picture of personal strengths and areas of difficulty.
Read more about Specific Learning Difficulties and how they are identified here:
Before arriving for your assessment, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire providing background information. This will help me to understand your views, so that I can use tests which are exactly right for you. If you have any visual difficulties you will need to confirm that you have had an eye test within the last 6 months, as this may affect the results of your assessment. Testing for a full diagnostic assessment will take 3-4 hours face to face. There is sometimes an option to carry out some of the testing remotely, if preferred. I will provide some brief email feedback within 48 hours, and you will receive a written report within 14 days of receiving cleared payment.
You will receive a detailed report which describes and analyses your assessment results. This will also contain useful, practical and personalised recommendations which you may share with your school, employer, or any others. If you have received a diagnosis of a specific learning difficulty this report may be used to support an application for DSA, or for Reasonable Adjustments in the workplace. If you do not require a detailed report or a report confirming diagnosis, you may opt for a summary table of results together with a brief explanatory report.

(note that whilst a full diagnostic assessment report can provide very useful supporting evidence within schools , colleges and universities, provision made relies on local funding policy and a diagnosis of dyslexia or other SpLDs does not guarantee extra funding or the issue of a Statement of ALN. Where reports are used to support an application for Disabled Student Allowance, any provisions made will be at the discretion of the Unversity and in line with individual university policy.)
Exam Access Arrangements
I offer a fully streamlined service to examination centres and welcome enquiries from examination officers. I can offer you flexibility in travelling between sites and experience in working with a wide range of candidates, whether you have high numbers or only very few. Fees for this service are offered on a daily or hourly rate, ensuring that you get the very best value from your investment in my time, and you can be assured of a speedy turnaround.
To comply with JCQ rules, when assessing for exam access arrangements I will:
-
Liaise with the centre to confirm your views on the students' individual needs, and on their normal way of working. This part of the procedure is essential to comply with JCQ rules.
-
Carry out assessments of reading, writing (if required) and processing skills.
-
Complete the Specialist Assessor section (8C) of the JCQ application form.
-
Feed back to school/centre/student/parents as appropriate
-
If required, a brief report can be produced confirming the findings of the assessments and making recommendations based on this.
Please note that to comply with the are strict deadlines for schools and colleges to submit applications and you are advised to read the current JCQ regulations for guidance. Note that the weeks approaching the February deadline for summer exams can be particularly busy for assessors, so early booking is recommended,
NOTE : Assessment results and report contents are treated as strictly confidential, and will be stored securely in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act

Literacy screening
Assessment of literacy skills will provide an overview of your reading and spelling skills and give you information about how you compare in mechanical reading, comprehension, spelling and reading/writing speed to others of the same age.
Your reading and spelling will also be analysed in detail to give you an interesting insight into your personal strengths and should identify any areas of written English which may be causing difficulty. This is not the same as an assessment for dyslexia, which needs to look in detail at many other areas as well as literacy (see full diagnostic assessment).
A literacy screening assessment will take around 1 to 2 hours, and you will be provided with a brief written report detailing the results, and providing useful suggestions for moving forward and addressing troublesome areas.

Bespoke Assessments
Everything else seems fine but there may be just one or two areas which are puzzling – like handwriting, or memory, or being able to organise your thoughts for writing. It’s often possible to carry out assessments of specific areas to help answer some of your questions and to suggest some possible ways forward .
The length of a bespoke assessment will vary according to the area being assessed, but you should usually allow around one and a half hours. You will receive verbal feedback within 24 hours of the assessment ( often on the same day), followed by a brief report once the assessment has been formally analysed.
Note that all test results and the contents of reports are treated as strictly confidential, and will be stored securely in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
